OK, so I enjoy not paying licences to "the man" for buggy software, when I can use Open Source, Freeware or Shareware for the price of a voluntary donation.   These are my personal free software favorites that I use almost daily.  Enjoy!

  • NeoOffice is a great office suite, that includes: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database. I use it regularly and havent' found a reason to crack open my MS products, because it can import and export into MS formats.
  • Gimp is as powerful as Adobe Photoshop (with similar interfaces, but also as complex to learn and master).
  • Skitch is fun for grabbing web images and adding comments or easily resizing.  Oh and you can share your annotated images online.  It's in public beta right now, so go get it before they put a price tag on it.  It's also oddly enough, fun to use. Laughing That's not something you can say everyday about a software.
  • Cyberduck is easy to use FTP/sFTP.  Drag and drop those files in and out of your web directories. Change permissions. Copy and duplicate and rename.
  • Adium is good for aggregating your IM accounts into one window (I look at FB and Yahoo IMs)
  • MAMP is for setting up a local LAMP (Linux/Mac OSX, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment(s) on your Mac OSX for testing and building websites and web applications.  I use it to test PHP code, or to build test sites locally (faster). Considering that setting up a LAMP server is no walk in the park for even a server admin, installing MAMP is as easy as installing any other Mac application. Which is saying that it's really, really easy!
  • ClamXav is an antivirus software based on ClamAV.  The interface isn't Mac elegant, but it has automated features that make it indispensable.
  • DropJPG is for easily resizing (k) of images, and converting a file into a jpg.  That's right...that's all it does.
  • Smultron is a text editor, which is indispensable for writing and editing web code. It has auto highlighting features, and actual line numbers, which developers love.
  • TweetDeck is for tracking and publishing to Twitter. So what if it's NOT an OSX exclusive.  I love it anyway.

Mark Ingebretsen  - OpenOffice 3.0   |2009-03-05 19:05:14
Ed, no need to use NeoOffice, which is a branch of the OpenOffice project.
OpenOffice 3.0 for the Mac is (finally) completely integrated with the Mac OS.

Long time no see, Mark. I just added your over on FB. Good to see you alive and
kicking! I'll check out the OpenOffice project at the next update.

I used to swear by GIMP, but I just can\'t stand using X11 on Leopard.
It\'s a terrible implementation and it makes me want to install
Ubuntu.

... but then I wouldn\'t have the prettiness of Leopard, which is
far more important. :)
Ed Eusebio  - I could've sworn I got around X11 on my install   |2009-01-29 11:40:27
Maybe my addled brain is messed up, but I could swear that my last GIMP install
managed to get around the X11 issue. Maybe it was some sort of package like
http://www.macports.org/.
