I was asked this question today, and I realized that some of you might find the answer interesting. If you want your own domain name, like MeaslesMumpsRubella.com or StampsofKrypton.inc, it's best to buy those from a company like GoDaddy, or somewhere cheap. You DO NOT need to buy domains and hosting from the same company. And often, you shouldn't. Though companies WILL offer you a great deal, if you buy it all as some sort of package or add-on offer.
Borrow some space from a buddy or buddette, if you're still trying to figure out what platform to make your site with. Your buddy can allow you to piggy back on their hosting (a sub-domain or sub-directory), for either little or no charge. Make sure they are a close and tolerant buddy, because you're going to bug the crap out of them with all your Web 101 questions. BTW: I buy domains at GoDaddy.com (no they don't pay me, and I don't run their ads), because their system makes it easy to track and maintain domains. But I have hosting at Joomla specific hosts like my own company XMediaServices, and SiteGround.com (they don't pay me either). Through my sites there aren't as fast as at my own company, for dabbling about and "hobby or test sites", I like SiteGround's administrative interfaces (cPanel and Fantastico software installer). XMedia is more of a premium host for development heavy organizations who need lots of custom access, and lots of auto backups, better security and speed. As well as a human response, when the shit hits the development fan. And if you spend a lot of time doing development, it does. Geek Note: Your domain name (or URL) is just a word representation of an internet number address. It makes it easier for humans to find your site, instead of having to type in something like 123.45.678.912 when they are looking for you at MyNakedBabyPictures.com.
